What this tool is for
VIN Decoder brings several open vehicle datasets into one place. It helps you identify a vehicle, compare possible specifications, find model recall campaigns and understand which information still needs checking before buying a used car.
The service is maintained by the VIN Decoder website team. We are independent of vehicle manufacturers, government registries and carVertical. This is not an official manufacturer build sheet or a government vehicle record.
What makes a result useful
A decoded model name is a starting point. Different markets use different VIN rules, and a model can have several engines, bodies and equipment packages. Our results separate VIN pattern information from model specifications and registry data where available. When a source cannot establish a field, it should remain unknown.
Read how we decode a VIN and match the sources for the distinction between a VIN-specific record, a possible model variant and a recall campaign.
Free data and optional history reports
The decoder does not require an account or payment. Available public data is shown without buying a report. For some countries, license plate lookup provides additional registry or inspection information, including UK MOT mileage records where returned by the service.
We may earn a commission if you buy an optional carVertical report through a marked affiliate link. Buying a report is not required to view our free results. Availability and contents of a paid report are determined by the report provider.
Corrections and feedback
Open datasets and pattern matching can be incomplete or wrong. If a result mixes a generation, engine or recall from another model, send a correction with the page link and the field in question. Do not send ownership documents or identity documents.
