Choosing between a VIN search, registration lookup and inspection record? Compare the checks and their coverage before interpreting a result.
Three different kinds of information
| Result type | What it means | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| VIN structure and pattern | A manufacturer prefix, a recognized model code, or a year or generation where the encoding is supported. | A complete factory build sheet or proof that the VIN belongs to the vehicle being sold. |
| Model-level specifications | Possible engines, bodies, dimensions, emissions or safety data matched by model, year and generation when available. | The exact engine, trim or installed equipment on this individual vehicle. |
| Registry or inspection result | Fields returned by a supported registry for the VIN or license plate used in that lookup. | Complete history across every country or an independent inspection of the car today. |
1. Read the identifier
The VIN form accepts 17 characters. The manufacturer section and supported model patterns are decoded locally, then enriched from available sources. A successful format check does not prove that a vehicle exists or that its identity is genuine.
Older vehicles and some domestic-market chassis identifiers use different formats. A model in our specification catalogue is not a promise that its original chassis number can be decoded by the 17-character form.
2. Apply the rules for the market and manufacturer
VIN position 10 cannot be treated as the model year for every vehicle worldwide. Our decoder handles supported exceptions for European manufacturers. Where the model pattern establishes a generation but not an exact year, a generation range is more honest than an invented production year.
A North American check-digit warning also needs market context. It should not, by itself, make a European VIN a confirmed typo. Consult the vehicle and its original registration documents when details disagree.
3. Match available sources
| Source | Used for | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| NHTSA vPIC | Manufacturer-reported decoding fields. | Coverage varies by market and model year; European results can be sparse. |
| NHTSA recalls, RDW | Potential recall and safety campaigns for the matching model. | A matching campaign does not prove that your particular VIN is affected or that a repair remains outstanding. Confirm with the manufacturer or an official VIN recall service. |
| Transport Canada, EU Safety Gate | Official services for a separate manual safety-campaign check. | Automated lookup could not be verified for these services. Use the official links; missing results here do not establish that no campaign exists. |
| cardata.wiki | Model and variant specifications, narrowed by known year or generation. | Several possible variants may remain. Catalogue data is not VIN-specific factory equipment. |
| EPA fuel economy, EEA CO₂ | Available consumption and emissions figures. | These are matched model or variant figures, not a measurement of this car. |
| RDW Netherlands, UK DVLA and DVSA MOT | Supported license plate lookups and inspection information. | Country-specific coverage. UK mileage is an MOT reading at a test date, not a guarantee of total lifetime mileage. |
| Other available national sources, including Norway, Israel, Czechia and NZTA | Additional technical data or model-pattern evidence when available. | A source may need credentials or have limited coverage. Availability is not guaranteed for every lookup. |
| Wikidata and Wikipedia | Model context and an illustrative model photograph. | The photo is not a photograph of the entered VIN's actual vehicle. |
4. Interpret missing or cached information
A source returning no records is different from a source being temporarily unavailable. A missing recall result is not proof that a car has no recalls. We keep the last available useful result when possible and identify stale or incomplete results rather than treating an interrupted lookup as a new verified fact.
Live lookup results are normally reused for 30 days; a later visit triggers a refresh. A published report can remain stored longer, and an older useful report can be shown with its retrieval date if a refresh fails. Catalogue imports can be older and do not all update on the same schedule. A lookup date describes retrieval, not a guarantee that every underlying record was updated that day.
Examples and corrections
The site includes demonstration identifiers to illustrate the interface. These are labelled as examples and are not verified records of individual vehicles. They should not be used to make a purchase decision.
If a result is inconsistent, compare it with the vehicle's registration and manufacturer information, then report the specific field. Include a page link and a source for the correction when available. We do not need identity or ownership documents.
