“DSG” does not tell you the number of gears
Volkswagen’s Golf V history records six-speed DSG applications and a seven-speed DSG introduction in 2007. An advert that only says “Golf V DSG” therefore leaves an important part of the specification open.
- Request the vehicle’s transmission code or original build specification and confirm the number of forward gears. Use the documentation for the actual car, rather than another Golf with the same engine badge.
- Check the build period, engine and five-door body together. Volkswagen’s chronology covers the wider Golf V range, so a feature mentioned there is not evidence that every body and engine combination received it.
- Once the gearbox is identified, compare the matching catalogue row and check its maintenance requirements in the applicable service documentation. If the code is unavailable, retain “DSG, exact version unconfirmed” rather than inferring six or seven speeds.
