WMI (1–3) World Manufacturer Identifier, Volkswagen uses WVW · WVG · WV1 · WV2 · 1VW · 3VW.
VDS (4–9) manufacturer-defined vehicle description. Position 9 is a check digit in North American formats; other formats may use it differently.
Position 10 a model-year code in North American and some other formats. It must not be read as a year for every Volkswagen VIN.
Position 11 often a plant code, interpreted using the matching manufacturer format.
Serial (12–17) the unique production sequence number.

A platform can span more than one version

The Typ code identifies a model family and may narrow its generation. Some mappings span adjacent versions, such as the Passat B6/B7 family. Compare the decoded year, body and documents before selecting specifications.

Separate model year from first registration

The supported format can encode a model year at position 10. That can differ from the first registration date. Neither the model code nor the year supplies a complete factory-option list.

Choose the right specification

A Volkswagen platform code can be useful without uniquely naming a generation. Volkswagen’s own references give 1K for both Golf V and Golf VI, so this decoder now keeps that match at Golf family level. A reliable year and the actual body help choose the correct catalog; 1K alone does not.

  • Check the full VIN before applying a ZZZ-format example to an imported vehicle.
  • Match the year and the hatchback, estate or other body before comparing engines.

An older Volkswagen may need a different manual

Volkswagen UK points to the windscreen and the service book for the VIN. Its manual page directs owners of cars registered before 2018 to a retailer for the correct edition. If an older Golf VIN is not accepted by that portal, this alone does not mean the VIN is invalid. Windscreen side and other markings must be checked in the matching manual.
