Why check a VIN when buying from France?

A car registered in France may have been manufactured for another market or imported earlier. Compare the identification number on the vehicle with certificat d'immatriculation (carte grise) and the advert. A manufacturer or model mismatch needs investigation; a matching decode does not authenticate the car, prove its mileage or rule out damage.

A modern VIN has 17 characters. The first three form the WMI; the remaining positions follow manufacturer and market rules. Position 10 is a year in some formats, but not all European VINs. The WMI does not identify the country where a car was last registered. See the decoding rules and limits.
