Checking a German car: FIN, registration papers and campaign evidence

This site decodes supported VINs from German vehicles. It does not offer a German number-plate registry search, a keeper search or an HU inspection-history database.

  1. Copy the FIN from field E

On the Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I, field E identifies the vehicle’s FIN. Compare it with the number on the vehicle. The registration number, document number and FIN are different identifiers.

    Berlin registration authority: field E
  2. Keep registration papers in context

German registration documents support identification and registration procedures. The federal service portal explains that Teil II is not, by itself, proof of ownership. Follow the official authority’s guidance for the actual transaction.

  3. Confirm a campaign against the individual FIN

KBA publishes a public recall database for vehicles, parts and accessories. A matching model campaign is a starting point; ask the manufacturer or an authorised repairer whether this FIN is included and whether the work is complete.

A model year is not the first-registration year

Use a trustworthy manufacture or model year when refining specifications. If only the registration date is known, do not force a generation match from that date alone. European VIN patterns may identify a model family without an exact production year.

Why check a VIN when buying from Germany?

A car registered in Germany may have been manufactured for another market or imported earlier. Compare the identification number on the vehicle with Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I (Fahrzeugschein) and the advert. A manufacturer or model mismatch needs investigation; a matching decode does not authenticate the car, prove its mileage or rule out damage.

The “Fahrgestellnummer (FIN)” on a German car

Fahrgestellnummer (FIN)

Use the full identification number from the vehicle’s documents. This decoder supports the modern 17-character VIN format, not every historical chassis number.

Vehicle markings

Common modern locations include the windscreen base and a door-jamb label. Check the owner’s manual for the location on this model and compare the markings with the paperwork.

Registration document

It's printed in field E of the Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I (Fahrzeugschein) (the EU-harmonised registration certificate).

Read the manufacturer’s format, not the registration country

A modern VIN has 17 characters. The first three form the WMI; the remaining positions follow manufacturer and market rules. Position 10 is a year in some formats, but not all European VINs. The WMI does not identify the country where a car was last registered. See the decoding rules and limits.

What the free check shows, and what it doesn't

The free VIN result contains available technical and model-level data. It does not provide a complete mileage timeline, accident record or theft check. A paid provider may have additional records, depending on the vehicle and market.

Germany VIN check FAQ

Can I check a Germany VIN for free?+
Yes. Enter a supported 17-character VIN to find available vehicle details and model-level data, without an account. Registration in Germany does not guarantee coverage: the manufacturer, original market and VIN format affect the results.
Where is the VIN on a German car?+
Compare the identification number on the vehicle with field E of the Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I (Fahrzeugschein) (the EU-harmonised registration certificate). Modern vehicles often display it at the windscreen base or on a door-jamb label; consult the owner’s manual for the correct location. The local term is “Fahrgestellnummer (FIN)”.
What does the Germany VIN check show, and what doesn't it?+
The free VIN result contains available technical and model-level data. It does not provide a complete mileage timeline, accident record or theft check. An optional paid report may add records where the provider has coverage. No result, free or paid, proves that a car has never been damaged.
Do EU recalls apply to German cars?+
EU Safety Gate publishes product safety alerts, including vehicle campaigns. A model match is a lead to check, not confirmation that your VIN is included or a repair remains outstanding. Confirm the VIN with the manufacturer or an authorised repairer. EEA emissions figures are separate model-level data.
