How to read a modern Tesla VIN

WMI (1–3) World Manufacturer Identifier, Tesla uses 5YJ · XP7 · LRW · 7SA.
VDS (4–9) manufacturer-defined vehicle description. Position 9 is a check digit in North American formats; other formats may use it differently.
Position 10 a model-year code in North American and some other formats. It must not be read as a year for every Tesla VIN.
Position 11 often a plant code, interpreted using the matching manufacturer format.
Serial (12–17) the unique production sequence number.

Reading your Tesla result

Tesla results use available NHTSA manufacturer-submitted data and model-level open specifications. Coverage can differ by market and VIN format.

Model and motor data are not battery condition

When available, the VIN result identifies the Tesla model, model year and manufacturer-reported motor information. It does not measure battery health, remaining usable capacity or today’s real-world range.

Compare the correct model and variant

Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X are different model families. A catalog can list Standard Range, Long Range and Performance variants together. Those alternatives do not establish the battery pack or software features currently installed on a particular car.

Software and recalls need a current check

A VIN decode does not confirm a car’s current software version or enabled paid features. A model-level recall campaign is also not proof of an outstanding repair. Check the car’s information screen and confirm VIN-specific campaigns with Tesla.
